Sun Safety Tips, How to Protect Aging Skin From Harmful UV Rays

Check out our tips to keep your skin safe from the sun this summer!

Introduction

Our skin becomes more and more susceptible as we age to sun damage and its harmful ultraviolet rays. Older adults in particular need to take extra care to protect themselves and their delicate skin from sun damage and help to reduce their risk of skin cancer. Practicing sun safety, you can enjoy the outdoors whilst also protecting your skin. In this article we explore why skin protection is so important for those of older age and provide valuable tips for maintaining healthy and glowing summer skin in the sun.

Vulnerabilities of Aging Skin

As time goes by, our skin undergoes natural changes that make it more vulnerable to the effects of UV radiation. Why older adults cant skip UV protection and need to be particularly cautious:

Weakened Immune System: The ability for our skin cells to repair damage by UV radiation weakens with age, therefor increasing the risk of skin cancer.

Thinning Skin: Our skin becomes thinner and loses its ability to retain water, making it more susceptible to sunburn and damage.

Reduced Melanin Production: Melanin is the substance in our bodies that produce pigmentation in our hair, eyes and skin. As we age, our melanin production lessons leaving our skin more vulnerable to forms of sun damage such as sunburn.

Sun Safety Tips

Follow these helpful sun safety tips to protect your delicate skin from harmful UV rays and maintain your skin health.

Apply Sun Cream Correctly: First of all, choose a sun cream with an SPF of 30 or more and one that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. On clean dry skin apply a liberal amount to your face ears and neck then rub into skin gently. When applying to the body don’t forget the back of your hands. You can purchase sun cream specifically for the face which is less greasy and can be worn better under make up. Remember sun cream should be reapplied every 2 hours. Try to include sun protection into your everyday routine.

Enjoy The Shade: During peak hours of direct sunlight from around 10am to 4pm, UV rays at their most intense at this time, you should seek shade from the sun, under trees, a parasol or a garden gazebo. Or if you are unable to find suitable shade, make sure to wear protective clothing such as a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses and even throw on a cotton over shirt with long sleeves. You still need to apply sun screen even if you will be in the shade or wearing protective clothing.

Apply A Lip Balm That Has SPF: Using a lip balm with SPF protection this will keep your lips moisturised and protected from the sun.

Check Medications: Some medications have photosensitivity warnings, as they can increase sensitivity to sunlight. Check on your medication labels or with your doctor to determine if your medications could be affected. If so, it is best to allow extra precautions to avoid excessive sun exposure.

Keep Hydrated: Sufficient hydration is crucial for our skin health. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water throughout the day. If you are someone who struggles to drink a lot of water check out our previous article - Easy Ways to Make Water Test Better
